September 14th...Simon Anderson, 9-11, The Nor'easters, Michael Colby, the Apple Watch, and saying Goodbye to
Emma Jacobs

I have bitter sweet feelings about today. It is my son Max's 23rd birthday and for that I am eternally grateful. But it is also my late nephew Michael Colby's birthday. He would of been 32 today. Mike and Max sharing the same birthday was always something special in our family. Last night in Newburyport we celebrated Michael's life by having a Fund Raiser to raise money for a Scholarship in his name.

Max was there as well as every other living member of our immediate family. They were all there except Michael. He passed on June 9th, 2014 from a heroin overdose. I tell you all this not to raise eyebrows and to paint a negative picture of my nephew, but rather to awaken you all to the evils of drug addiction and how it reaches out and touches almost everyone. From all walks of life. From every level of income earnings. It has no clear demographics.

Heroin knows no boundaries. It can get any one of us.

Heroin got my nephew. He was a super talented multi media artist and he left this earth way too early. And if there's one thing I know for certain it is this. If he could look into a crystal ball and see the pain that his passing has caused his family and friends, especially his mother. There is NO WAY ON EARTH that he would willingly stick a needle in his arm again. I know this for certain.

So the good side of his passing is, all of his young cousins and friends can see what his death has done. They can see it very clearly. They can see the waste that heroin has wrought. So hopefully, they will all think twice before they pop a pill. Or snort some powder. Or god forbid, put a needle into their arms (not knowing what it is that's going into their systems) and live to see and create another day.

Happy Birthday Michael Colby. We miss and love you.



Can you imagine what it must be like to be the sole person responsible for changing ALL of surfing virtually overnight? No?
Me either. But that's what Aussie Simon Anderson did. It's true. Raise your hand if you have ever owned a tr-fin surfboard. I'm guessing that everyone who's reading this blog has their hand up. Mine is. And everyone I know does too.

Simon Anderson made the original Thruster (Tr-fin) board in 1981.

Every single surfer who was anyone during that time made the switch from single fins and twin fins to tri fins. It was the single biggest design breakthrough in the history of modern surfing. And that man, Aussie Simon Anderson was in town last week to talk about board designs and to meet and greet all the local surfers.



Shown here with sponsor Dave "CROP" Cropper at Flatbread in Hampton on Tuesday September 9th, 2014. Not only did Simon hang out and talk shaping with other members of his team, but he also hung around as I showed a sneak preview of my latest movie THE COLD COAST. It was a great night all around.



So many surf legends have passed through our sleepy surf town.

He even convinced me to try and get back on a shorter board. What he said made sense. He is after all, in the same category as I am as far as age and mechanics of the older human body goes. So I will give the shortboard another try before I finally relinquish to the side affects of father time. I'll give it one more chance.

It is with a heavy heart that I bring you yet again, the sad news of another surfer passing away. Emma Jacobs died in a motor vehicle accident on September 10th, 2014 . She was 17 years old. Emma was a surfer and a volunteer who helped out each year with the WOUNDED WARRIORS HIT THE BEACH campaign.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the whole Jacobs family. I will let you all know if there is a Surfer's paddle for Emma.



Rest In Peace Emma and thank you for your selfless contributions to our annual HIT THE BEACH day as well as all the other volunteer work you did here on the seacoast the last few years. You will be missed, but never forgotten.

Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances

The big story this week again is all about our NEW enemies ISIS.
President Obama laid out his strategy to taking out ISIS. And they in turn responded by taking the life of yet another unarmed civilian by beheading him. Lovely. These ass wipes of the universe must ALL die. The sooner the better. And not for nothing, but the President better get his shit together and stop saying you are NOT going to be putting boots on the ground. If boots on the ground is the only way to kill and dismantle them, then get the F*** out of the way and let our military take the fight to them.




The third beheading by ISIS. This time a young British civilian who was captured last year in Syria. He was an Aid Worker. He was beheaded because Great Britain sided with the US and has re pledged their alliance with us.

The WORLD must stand up and stop this evil. NOW!

The other big story this week is this absurd thing.
The APPLE wrist watch phone? Really? I mean REALLY?



This is one silly idea. Apple Watches? I'm sorry....that is just the biggest waste of time and money. I mean hell, what's next the Apple Ring? The smaller the screen, the better? I don't think so.

Meanwhile, let's all take a minute, and enjoy the weekly
humiliation of the mastermind terrorist who killed 3,000 innocent civilians on September 11th, 2001. Here we see our boy KSM working on the APPLE Wrist Watch phone...really stupid huh?
Hey there's only so much I can choose from during the week.

the captured Al Qeada ICON is getting his weekly slap in the
face. You're welcome KSM fans.

* Note to self: Must pick up a case of Apple Pie plates at Home Depot this week.

The Patriots played The VIKINGS today in Minnesota and it was like the season just started. We smoked them 30-7. It was impressive to say the least. However, next week is going to be tough. We play the Super-bowl champs the Seattle Seahawks. I guess if I were smart, I'd savor this win while I can. Because who the hell knows what will happen next week. Certainly not me.

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE A GROM? Summer 2002

OK I walked around the 10th Street opening asking the Groms what it's like to be a Grom. Most of em had no idea what a Grom was...from the summer of 2002. Hey we were all young once. See how many of these young groms you can recognize. Pretty funny....( I know they won't think so, but I do).

The LATEST Release from SURF FREE OR DIE due in the Summer of 2014 is called THE COLD COAST. This trailer is a clip from the winter storms here in Northern New England. HERCULES, JANUS, NIKA, QUINTUS, PAX, REX, and all the rest.
The sea smoke and sunrise footage is worth the viewing alone. Not to mention the beautiful sunsets and the white snow covered seacoast.

The surfing in this particular clip is all local New Hampshire guys. Including: Jesse Gould, Weston Rogers, Johnny Meehan, Joel Feid, Ryan McGill, Lenny & Kai Nichols, Max Fatello, Johnny and Perry Reynolds, and Stevie O'hara.

The music in this clip is by my old friend Robin Trower .
